Softball: Blue Raiders continue homestand against Cumberland The Lindsey Wilson softball team is in the home stretch of the regular season, literally. After hosting 14th-ranked Freed-Hardeman University last weekend, the Blue Raiders are back at Marilyn D. Sparks Park this week to welcome another Tennessee-based foe Cumberland University. Games one and two of this week's three-game series are slated for Thursday afternoon beginning at 3pmCT. Then, on Friday, game three will take place at 1pmCT. The Phoenix currently sit at 9-9 in conference-play following a 2-1 series win over Bethel University (TN) and are a half-game ahead of Lindsey Wilson in the conference standings with the postseason quickly approaching. Freshman Anna Lay has been at the forefront of Cumberland's success so far this season as she actively paces the team in total hits, batting average, runs scored, walks, and stolen bases. In fact, her 36 clean swipes lead the league and rank eighth in the NAIA. Fellow freshman Abby Chappell sports the Phoenix second-highest total in doubles and runs batted in, trailing only senior Ashtyn Blair in both categories by a single hit and RBI. In the circle, senior Bailey Griffith has fired the conference's third-most innings at 113.2, during which she has collected 92 strikeouts and nine wins en route to a 2.59 earned-run average. Cumberland is 16-3 in its hometown of Lebanon but 4-11 on the road. Lindsey Wilson, on the other hand, is 6-10 this year when playing in Columbia. Senior Za'Kiya Sizemore boasts a team-best 0.340 batting average at Sparks Park and has connected on all three of her home runs this season at home. She has also knocked in a team-high nine RBIs in 16 starts at The Park. Brylee Pickerell and Alexis Garayzar rank just behind Sizemore with 15 hits apiece at home, followed by Tanlee Hudgins and Desiree Chang with 13 each and Cheyenne Sandoval with 11. As a team, the Blue Raiders are batting 0.260 at home, including 0.269 in six home conference games. On the rubber, Savannah Robbins has appeared in all of the local's home conference contests. The freshman is 1-0 in those games and has a 2.21 earned run average. Lindsey Wilson and Cumberland met four times in 2022, all in Tennessee. The Blue Raiders won three of those matchups by a combined score of 20-1. The lone loss was a 10-9 decision in favor of the Phoenix. This story was posted on 2023-04-19 17:16:04
