Adair Smoking Rate for adults is same as for Kentucky, 31%

But Adair County has lower rate of adult smokers than 10-County Lake Cumberland Area Health District
The smoking rate in Adair County, for adults, is 31%, according to the Kentucky Tobacco Use Prevention and Cessation Status Report, 203, prepared by UK and the Kentucky Department of Public Health, Jelaine Phillips of the Lake Cumberland Area Health Department, Columbia, KY, reports.

While this number may seem high, it is the same as the average for Kentucky as a whole, and slightly below the Lake Cumberland District's 31.7% rate for adult smokers.

The 31% figure virtually mirrors the percentage of participants who do not favor a smoking ban in Adair County businesses. That number, at the time this article was written, stood at 31.5%.

Sadder, perhaps, is the number of Kentucky kids who smoke. Ms. Phillips says that the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids reports that 32.7% of Kentucky high school students smoke. Surprisingly, the percentage of high school girls who smoke, 33.4%, is higher than the percentage of girls, 31.8%.

Should the City of Columbia and/or Adair County ban smoking in public places?
