Wayne Gorden Hughes, 91, Taylor County, KY

Wayne Gorden Hughes left this earthly life on Saturday, April 8, 2023, at the age of 91. He was married to Gladys Bolt Hughes on March 21, 1953. They had just recently celebrated seventy years of marriage together.

He was a self-taught agricultural leader having raised many animals, crops, and his prize apple orchard that he turned into a family business with his wife and children. His business brought in many new friends that loved to visit and talk. Wayne rarely met a stranger and if he did, they were not strangers for long. If you hadn't heard his stories of hauling pigs to market, picking strawberries, or grading apples, he would have been eager to tell you all about it.

Besides being a businessman and family man, He was a true and faithful servant of God with membership of over fifty years at Cold Springs Primitive Baptist Church. In the past few months when he couldn't make it to Sunday services, he was most definitely there in heart and spirit.

He was born in Taylor County, Kentucky, on January 30, 1932, to Bob and Connie Hughes of Elkhorn, Kentucky.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Connie Hughes; a son, Kerry Wayne Hughes; three sisters, Margaret Hughes, Jewell Hughes, and Barbara Henderson; two brothers, Orville and Gary Hughes; and a granddaughter, Melissa Renee' Hughes.

Left on earth waiting to see him again are his wife, Gladys Hughes; two daughters, Karen (and Ed) Garner and Michelle (Patrick) Moore, three granddaughters, Jessica (and JP) Loar, Meranda (and Jesse) Milroy, and Ashley (and James) Pittman. He was also a loving Poppie to his great-grandchildren, Zachary, Tanner, Nova, Haylee, Zathera, and Jimmy; two sisters, Doris Reynolds and Mildred Druin; and two brothers, Larry (and Linda) Hughes and Roger (and Donna) Hughes.

Life will not be the same without our precious Daddy Wayne. Everyone, especially at his doctor's offices, was always glad to see him as he was their sweetheart and most certainly ours, as well. Wayne has battled various types of cancer over the past twenty-seven years, but he was a true fighter. He loved his church, his family, and especially his God, knowing he would see him through. He is now our shining star until we meet again. He will always be in our hearts.

The funeral service will be held at 2pmET on Tuesday, April 11, 2023, at Cold Springs Primitive Baptist Church with Bro. Roger Price and Bro. Kenny Blevins officiating. Burial will follow in Cold Springs Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5-8 on Monday, April 10, 2023, at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home and from 12-2 on Tuesday, April 11, 2023, at Cold Springs Primitive Baptist Church.

Pallbearers will be Ed Garner, Patrick Moore, Roger Hughes, Larry Hughes, Andrew Ellis, and Wes Ellis. Honorary pallbearers will be James Pittman, Jesse Milroy, and J.P. Loar.
