Carol Perkins: Spring Break with JC

Previous Column: Carol Perkins: Go Eme Go

By Carol Perkins

Spring Break, the beach, seafood, and family. That was my idea when we booked a condo in Perdido Key. I hadn't spent much time lately with my Tennessee grandson so this trip would be memorable.

Best laid plans don't always happen. First, Carla's husband ended up in the hospital the week before the trip and was released three days before we were to leave. Guy developed a severe sinus infection/headache the night before departure. Not good. The next morning, I headed out alone, not knowing who was going with me. JC, our seventeen-year-old grandson, and I headed out, just the two of us. I was fearful he would be bored with me, but I don't think he was. The others, hopefully, were coming the next day.

JC's experience with interstate driving was limited, plus the size of my vehicle was not comfortable for him so he was the "GPS" of the trip.

I had never driven straight through anywhere (for almost nine hours), but I was determined to get there. We stopped at Bucees, drove through McDonald's, made a Dollar Store stop close to the condo, and arrived before midnight. He listened to his music, I listened to podcasts, and we discussed the events of the world, from politics to religion to the oceans and seas. (He plans to be a history teacher.) The next day we slept late, attempted lunch at Lulu's but there was over a two-hour wait, and then hung out around the condo. To sit near the beach or on the deck, I would have needed a coat. I read and he did whatever kids do on their computers.

The next night, the other three arrived. Mark was dragging and Guy wasn't much better. Guy took twenty steps on the beach and Mark looked from the balcony. Carla and I had one day in the sand because of the chill, the rain, and the fog. We woke up one morning and couldn't see the condo next to us.

JC rode home with me and we listened to the Broadway production of Les Miserables. (He had watched the movie and I didn't know he was a fan like me.) Then we listened to music from CATS. Not my favorite, but one of his. He is the grandson I can take to the theatre! I also introduced him to Roy D. Mercer. This is a trip we won't forget!
