OPEN LETTER: November 17, 2005 is ''Great American Smokeout'' Smokers asked to give up habit for a day. Restaurants asked to donate the money. Or make Thursday, November 17, 2005 their "Quit Day" Attention Restaurants! On Thursday, November 17, 2005 you can help our community. Each year during this time, the nation participates in The Great American Smokeout. This is an event to challenge all smokers to quit for one day. This year the event is sponsored and supported by Adair County High School Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) and Champions clubs, Adair County Substance Abuse Coalition and the Lake Cumberland District Health Departments Tobacco Prevention Program. The idea for The Great American Smokeout began in 1971 when a resident of Massachusetts asked people to give up smoking for a day and donate the money they would have spent on cigarettes to a local high school. The idea caught on, and now more people quit smoking on this day than any other day of the year. For people thinking about quitting, the Great American Smokeout offers public support and a feeling of camaraderie with others who are giving up cigarettes for the day. Many people never pick up another cigarette after the Smokeout, especially if they have planned their Quit Day in advance. We are asking and encouraging all restaurants to be Smoke Free on November 17th 2005. Students will be contacting as many restaurants as possible but will not be able to reach each restaurant in Adair County If you would like to participate and have not been contacted by a high school student please call the Adair County Health Department at 384-2286 or 384-5564, extension 221. Leave a message stating the name of your restaurant and phone number and we will help you plan this event. All participating restaurants will be recognized. Thank you for your support!
