KSP Post 15, Columbia wants Adair Countians to travel more safely Adair County seat belt use barely over half state average As we approach the busy holiday season, the troopers of Kentucky State Police Post #15, Columbia, urge everyone to please buckle-up. Last year in Kentucky, 963 people were killed in traffic collisions. Of those, 527 were not wearing seatbelts. Most every trooper has investigated a collision where the occupants could have walked away, had they been properly belted. Most every trooper has investigated a collision where the occupants could have walked away, had they been properly belted. Already in 2005, 45 people have died in collision in the 11 county area covered by Post #15, compared to 36 for the entire year of 2004. These 45 people are not nameless statistics. They are friends, neighbors, and family members taken from the communities forever. Of those 45 killed, 34 are known to not be wearing seatbelts. Only 37.8% of Adair vehicle occupants use seat belts Statewide, the average seatbelt usuage is 66%, but the average for Adair County is only 37.8%, with a majority of fatal accidents occuring on Highway KY 61 South, the Burkesville Road, and Highway KY 55 North, the Campbellsville Road, out of Columbia. Kentucky State Troopers and other law enforcement personnel will be paying extra attention to drivers not wearing belts, and to inatentive or reckless drivers, but we need you to do your part. Allow a little extra time to reach your destination, make sure everyone in your vehicle is properly secured, drive the speed limit, and pay attention to other traffic on the roadway. Together, we can make the roadways safer for everyone. If you don't buckle up for yourself, do it for the ones you love. Story courtesy Dispatcher Johnny A. Tarter, Kentucky State Police Post 15, Columbia, KY This story was posted on 2005-11-08 11:50:16
