CYRUS uncovers unique feature of 1949 Ford in ad of the era Those merchandising Fords: they sold the whistle too! Does anyone remember the whistling gas tanks introduced on the 1949 Ford passenger vehicles? Folks, I have neither enough imagination nor enough nerve tonic to make this up. This was before the days of automatic shutoffs on gasoline pumps, and the attendants had to listen for the sound of the gas tank getting full. According to an article in the September 7, 1949 issue of the Adair County News, the gas tanks on the new Fords would start whistling when the tank was nearly full. The faster the pump ran, the louder the whistle. With this innovation, the article stated, the attendant could "stand erect while filling the tank, instead of stooping with his ear to the spout." Furthermore, the ad said, "It improves tempers all way around by reducing chances of spillage . . . When the tank is full it stops whistling." One wonders if this actually worked, or if Ford were just whistling "Dixie."
