Basketball: LWC women use late surge to defeat TN Southern

The Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team used a late surge to defeat Tennessee Southern 50-46 on Thursday evening at Biggers Sports Center.

The Blue Raiders picked up their third conference win of the season and ninth overall. Maleigha Oldham led the way with 20 points and Amelia Hodges added 10 points.

The Firehawks started the game strong with back-to-back three-pointers and ended the first quarter with an 8-0 run to take a 16-10 lead at the end of the opening frame.

The Blue Raiders responded with a 6-0 run of their own to tie the game at 16 early in the second quarter. Lindsey Wilson would fail to score in the final 4:50 before halftime leading to a 28-20 deficit at the break.

Lindsey Wilson opened the second half with new life as their full court press caused lots of problems for Tennessee Southern. The Firehawks suffered two turnovers early and the Blue Raiders held them scoreless for nearly seven minutes. The Blue Raiders suffered a short scoring drought of their own in the third quarter, going three minutes without scoring.

Oldham closed the third quarter with two three-pointers in the final 1:09 to draw the Blue Raiders within three, 36-33, heading into the final frame.

Hodges knocked down two jump shots to get the Blue Raiders going early in the fourth quarter and a third for her with 4:22 left in the fourth quarter would give Lindsey Wilson their first lead since the first quarter.

Tennessee Southern regained the lead with a three-pointer by Mary Mackie with 2:51 left in the game to go up 44-42.

With the game tied at 46, Juliah Bault came up with a huge steal and layup to put the Blue Raiders up by two with 25 seconds remaining. A defensive stop and two crucial free-throws by Hodges sealed the deal for the Blue Raiders.

Lindsey Wilson shot the ball 32.8% from the floor while Tennessee Southern shot 31.4% from the floor.

Lindsey Wilson returns to the court at 1pmCT on Saturday afternoon, January 21, 2023, as they welcome Cumberland University (TN) to Biggers Sports Center, 360 Spickard Drive, Columbia, KY.
