The Adair County Cooperative Extension Service has scheduled a meeting on the Tobacco Infrastructure Investment Program sponsored by the Burley Tobacco Growers Cooperative Association (BTGCA).

The meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 26th, starting at 6:30 p.m., at the Adair County Extension office.

The Tobacco Infrastructure Investment Program is a matching cost-share program for tobacco producers to build new curing facilities; renovate existing curing facilities; build stripping facilities; purchase moisture control equipment; purchase spray components and equipment; build greenhouse structures; renovate existing greenhouse structures; and purchase irrigation systems.

With the enactment of the tobacco buyout, tobacco growers are facing a great deal of uncertainty. The Burley Tobacco Growers Cooperative Association is committed to helping the tobacco growers to compete in this new market environment.

To help tobacco growers in making the transition, the BTGCA is providing this pilot program to invest over $3.9 million in cost match funds to allow tobacco growers in Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Missouri and West Virginia to improve their tobacco infrastructure.

Funds will be made available to each BTGCA district based on tobacco production and the number of BTGCA members in the district. If excess funds are determined to be available in a District, then those funds will be made available to the other districts. Priority will be given based on the post-mark date of the application.

The maximum cost share under this program is 50% of the eligible expense up to $5,000 per farm household [defined by Social Security Number (SSN) / Tax Identification Number (TIN)] and Farm Serial Number (FSN)].

Joe Spalding, District Representative for BTGCA, will be at the meeting to explain the program. If you are a tobacco producer, please plan to attend this meeting Wednesday night.
