COLUMBIA, KY. - The Lindsey Wilson family will be celebrated the weekend of November 4-5 when Lindsey Wilson College holds its 74th-annual Homecoming Weekend.

In addition to the annual events, this year's Homecoming Weekend will also give alumni and friends a glimpse of the future of Lindsey Wilson. Guests will be able to learn about how the college's 42,000-square-foot Science Center will affect the college.

When it is opened for the 2006-07 school year, the three-story building will be the largest building on the college's Columbia Campus.

"The Science Center will be one of the finest academic buildings among Kentucky's private colleges and universities," said Lindsey Wilson President William T. Luckey Jr. "The Science Center will allow our academic programs to continue their remarkable growth, which will enable us to continue to meet Southcentral Kentucky's higher-education needs."

This year's Homecoming Weekend will also include a special performance of the Lindsey Wilson Singers' current members and alumni at the Alumni Homecoming Banquet.

"For 10 years, the Lindsey Wilson Singers have been an outstanding collegiate choral group that has performed all over the world," said Brittani Miller, director of alumni relations. "This year's Homecoming Weekend will be a celebration of their decade of excellence."

Other special events this year include a golf scramble, sweetheart breakfast, family fun time in the Campus Quadrangle and presentation of a Lindsey Wilson scrapbook.

The weekend's events begin on Friday, November 4, with a golf scramble and then the Fifth-Annual Morris Shepherd '53 Ping-Pong Tournament.

Homecoming Parade is Saturday

Saturday will include the annual Homecoming parade through Columbia. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. CST in front of Richardson Hall, proceed down Lindsey Wilson Street, and through downtown Columbia. The parade will include floats by Lindsey Wilson student groups, local civic and government leaders and Lindsey Wilson alumni from across the college's history.

The grand marshal will be Elizabeth Lowe Whitfield of Bowling Green, Ky. An Adair County native, Whitfield is a 1949 Lindsey Wilson graduate and a trustee emeritus.

The Lindsey Wilson Homecoming King and Queen will be crowned between the women's and men's basketball games on Saturday afternoon at Biggers Sports Center.

At the Alumni Homecoming Banquet on Saturday, five alumni - including four Adair County residents - and one longtime friend of the college will be honored by the Lindsey Wilson National Alumni Association.

"Although we have a diverse group of awardees at this year's banquet, the one common theme that runs through all of their lives is that they are men and women who are committed to making a difference in their communities," said Miller, a 2003 Lindsey Wilson graduate. "They are all shining examples of what it means to be servant-leaders and give back to their communities."

Those to be honored at the banquet are:
  • Distinguished Alumnus Award: Judge Paul Barry Jones '55 of Columbia. An Adair County native, Jones is a retired district and circuit judge.

  • Distinguished Service Award: Rev. William R. Davenport '67 of Columbia. A Green County native, Davenport has served The United Methodist Church of Kentucky for more than 40 years.

  • Honorary Alumna: Marie Dorsey Garrett of Bowling Green, Ky., Garrett has maintained the John C. Dorsey Endowed Scholarship for more than 20 years. The scholarship helps Lindsey Wilson students with dyslexia.

  • Special Achievement Award: Special Achievement: Jo Anne Peden Smith '64 of Horse Cave, Ky. A retired educator, Smith is in her seventh year as Horse Cave mayor where she has led the Southcentral Kentucky city to a renaissance.

  • Young Alumnus & Alumna Award: Willis '94 and Traci '91 Pooler of Columbia. Willis is a former soccer coach and is currently in his third year as the college's athletic director; Traci, who has served the college in a variety of capacities in admissions, alumni and residence life, is dean of admissions.
