Ann Melton has now validated 539 of needed 744 Nickel Tax Recall names Count of valid signers to Nickel Tax Recall now 72.45% of total needed Initiative now needs on 205 more validated names to succeed Percentage of validated signatures drops, but only very slightly By Ed Waggener ed@columbiamagazine.com The Nickel Tax Recall Petition had a total of 539 signers validated this morning, Thursday, October 20, at 8:35 a.m., according to County Court Clerk Ann Melton. The figure is now 72.45% of the total needed to force an election on the issue, should the Adair County School District elect to take it to a vote. The County Clerk has now examined 1,009 of the 1983 names submitted. or 50.88% of the total submitted. If the validation continues with the same ratio for the balance of the names, it would appear that 1,059 names would survive the clerk's screening. The initiative now needs only 205 more validated names to succeed. This is out of total of 974 remaining signatures which have not be examined. Only a 21.04% pass rate will be needed for the remaining names. Mrs. Melton said that only a sufficient number, likely in the 850 range, will have to be validated to justify her calling the special election. "I'm slowed right now because of the need to get all the paperwork done for the tax bills," she said, and did not project a date for the project to be finished.
