Down Town Days Walk Features Citys Historical Sites Will pass some of the lesser known historical sites Sanctioned event of the American Volkssport Association By George Kolbenschlag (270) 384-6777 or gkolbensc@alltel.net This years annual Rotary sponsored family walk October 8 will feature some of the citys lesser-known historical sites. This is the fourth year for the annual event, now part of Columbias Down Town Days. One of the two three mile routes includes the mile long Columbia Walking Tour of History. Walkers will pass The Diddle Tavern, the sites of several early Columbia churches and a number of historic homes and businesses, all described in a free booklet available at the Columbia/Adair County Chamber of Commerce building on Burkesville Street one block off the square. Chamber building is starting point for walk The Chamber building is the starting point for the walk. It is not a race and families are encouraged to walk all or any part of the well-marked trails. Their purpose is to encourage physical fitness, promote fellowship, acquaint walkers with area history and to enjoy the outdoors. Walkers of all ages are invited, however youngsters should be accompanied by adults. As is the tradition, the event will go on rain or shine. Walkers may start anytime between 9:00 and 12:00 a.m.(CDT.) The walks are free. Water and soft drinks will be available for a small charge at several locations including at booths on the square. The walk is part of Columbias Downtown Days Festival, which includes arts and crafts, food, games and a variety of entertainment. The walk is a sanctioned event of the American Volkssport Association, a national organization that encourages community walks. Members of AVA will be given credit for the walk.
