Harvey-Ellis Motors collecting, delivering aid to Hurricane victims

Mike Ellis, James Harvey, Dean Roach and all the employees at Harvey Ellis Motors have been working overtime to help out victims of Hurricane Katrina. They have printed and delivered flyers to churches and have been collecting, boxing and loading supplies. They made their first trip south last week and say there is room for more on future trips. Response has been tremendous.

One Adair Countian, Mark Karnes, has made a trip to Mississippi personally, then donated his truck and trailer for the Harvey Ellis trip and has also given a thousand dollars for the purchase of personal clothing items that people were in dire need of.

To get the ball rolling, Mike said that he and Dean stopped at every every church in Adair County to leave this information and an invitation to send help:

"As a small, rural community, we cannot imagine the desperation and turmoil that iscurrently taking place across the devasted Gulf Coast. What is even more disturbing isthat many small, rural communities, much like our own, are suffering with little to noaid from FEMA or the American Red Cross.

"We have contacted several churches from the area and they tell stories that would breakanyone's heart. Stories like a father splitting his only meal of the day between hisfour children, leaving him nothing to eat. Babies who do not have the basicnecessities and the mothers who are forced to reuse disposable diapers day after day, even though they constantly fear the spread of bacteria to their small children. Twentyfamilies from one congregation have lost their homes and all their possessions.

"These small communities are being placed on the back burner for relief and that issimply not acceptable. We, as a community, need to ban together once more to give thebest we have to offer to those other small towns across the Gulf Coast who are desperatefor relief.

"We are organizing another shipment of relief items to be taken to those small towns inMississippi and Louisiana. These items are guaranteed to be given directly to smallcommunities that have not received assistance, other than food, from any of the federalrelief agencies. There is a list below of items that were specifically requested, butjust think about the little essentials that you use each day and maybe you can think ofsomething that these devastated families may need.

"CHILDRENS' NEEDS:

"Disposable diapers, all sizes; Pullups, all sizes; baby wipes, Onesies, Ready-to-eatformula, pacifiers, sippy cups, baby blankets, toys, books, baby lotion and bath, diaperrash ointment, baby food, and childrens' underwear in all sizes.

"ADULT NEEDS:

"Toothbrushes and tooth paste, deodorant and mouthwash, feminine hygiene products, combsand hair brushes, ponytail holders and hair clips, underwear and socks in all sizes, bodylotion and shampoo, wash cloths and towels, disposable razors, shaving creme and q-tips.

"GENERAL NEEDS:

"Paper towels, household cleaning supplies, disposable utensils, plates and cups, mops, brooms and buckets, rakes and shovels, large garbage bags, grills, lighter and charcoal, flashlights and batteries, C & D batteries, insect repellant.

"Harvey-Ellis Motors, located at 1072 Campbellsville Road, Columbia, is serving asa collection point for this relief effort. All items can be dropped off during businesshours Monday through Friday 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. or call384-2291 or 378-1791 for after-hours delivery or pickup of items.

"We want to say thank to everyone who has helped, and thank you in advance to all thosewe know will be helping in the days ahead."
