GONE to TEXAS! : Columbian there as EMT in preparation for Hurricane Rita John Aaron Conover gets call in Columbia at 11:00 p.m. Wednesday to meet up in Bowling Green, head for Texas. Kentucky ambulances escorted to Austin staging area by Texas State Patrol John Aaron Conover is in Texas today to help in the Hurricane Rita assistance effort. Mr. Conover is with Hardin County Emergency Medical Service (EMS). He is headed for a staging area in Austin. He was at the home of his parents, Brad and Sandy Conover, Columbia, KY, two nights ago when he got a call at 11:00 p.m. to come to meet up with other Kentucky EMS personnel in Bowling Green, KY, to join the convoy headed for Texas. His father said that he had word from his son that the ambulances were met by Texas State Patrolmen at the Texas border and were escorted in a Code Two mode. "That means flashing lights were on, but there were no sirens," Brad Conover said. The Hardin County EMS units were at first told they would be going to the Gulf Coast city of Port Arthur, but were diverted to a staging area in Austin. They will be involved in transporting residents of hospitals and nursing homes at first, and will follow up on search and rescue efforts. "About 80 ambulances from the State of Kentucky have gone to Texas," Bradley Conover said. John Aaron Conover, 20, is a 2003 graduate of Adair County High School and has worked with his father in the Emergency Medical Service field since he was a small child. Mr. Conover was one of the charter members of the Adair County EMS, who worked with the service while it was still a volunteer outfit. The group expects to be in Texas for three-to-five days, but the stay may be as long as two weeks.
