LWC Football set for season opener against St. Andrews

The No. 4-ranked Lindsey Wilson football team is set to open the 2022 season on Saturday, August 27, 2022, against St. Andrews (NC) at Parnell Family Stadium. Kickoff for the Blue Raiders' 13th season is slated for 1:30pmCT.

A new era of Lindsey Wilson football begins on Saturday when long-time defensive coordinator Phil Kleckler takes his spot on the sideline as head coach of the Blue Raider program. His defense over the past five seasons has been one of the best in the NAIA while his efforts led Lindsey Wilson to a 53-6 record during the span.

Last season, the Lindsey Wilson defense managed one of the best performances in program history -- leading the NAIA in scoring defense (11.2) and takeaways (36). Lindsey Wilson also ranked second in the NAIA in total defense (220.5 yards allowed per game), rushing defense (60.5 yards), and interceptions (24).

Defensive program records we set during the season for points fewest points allowed (146), fewest total yards allowed (2,866), fewest rushing yards allowed (787), and most shutouts (4) while tying the program record for most games in a season (13). The Lindsey Wilson defense held its opponents scoreless in 32 of the team's 52 quarters and pitched four shutouts.

A season ago, the Lindsey Wilson offense finished with an NAIA-best third down conversion rate, converting 111 times out of 216 opportunities for the second-best percentage at 51 percent, while having a third-best point per game average at 45.1.

The Blue Raider ground game produced 2,897 yards, a program season best, and 3,141 yards through the air. The rushing attack averaged 222.8 yards per game while averaging 241.6 via the air.

Last season, St. Andrews finished with a 1-10 overall record. One of their losses came against the Blue Raiders in the form of a 50-15 result in favor of Lindsey Wilson. The Blue Raiders opened the game with four straight touchdown drives to a 27-0 lead. Will McDonald and Ethan Cash split time at quarterback with both tossing two touchdowns.

Saturday's meeting is the third all-time between the two programs as LWC holds a 2-0 record over the Knights, including a 1-0 record at Parnell Family Stadium.

Live stats and video will be available. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30pmCT at Parnell Family Stadium.
