YOU CAN HELP: Relief heading to Gulf from Adair County

Friday morning, September 2, The Bank of Columbia, Jamestown Street Branch beside Wal-Mart, was a staging ground for local donations of emergency supplies for victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Another trip with supplies is being planned now. Call Doug Campbell at 384-0601, or watch for the trailer beside the Bank of Columbia at Wal-Mart toward the end of this week. Desperate needs are: power strip plugs, blankets, pillows, air mattresses, cots, toiletries, underwear.

Water, food and personal items were among the donations and first aid supplies loaded on to several trucks with trailers or large beds which left in a caravan for Mississippi last Friday evening, September 2. Hundreds of people kept up the flow of donations all day long. At one time in the middle of the day the workers and trailers could hardly be seen for the piles of boxes from the many donations.

The trip went smoothly. By Sunday afternoon the caravan crew had returned to Adair County with the report that, if anything, the need was more desperate than they had believed possible. That's why they now plan a second collection day in the same spot, and a second trip to Mississippi on September 9th.

The local outpouring of help has just begun. Both John Rarey and Doug Campbell are on standby with planes ready to respond to flights needed to carry victims to safe places. Communications has been the biggest problem. The Bank of Columbia also has a special account set aside to accept donations of money. Contact them at 384-6433 for information about making donations of money at the bank.

Helping Hurricane Katrina victims with supplies

2005-09-02 - Columbia, KY - Photo Linda Waggener. GOING SOUTH TO OFFER HELP: This group of givers were at the Bank of Columbia beside Wal-Mart early this morning. They were donating and packing the trailer for a trip to Mississippi where they will deliver water and supplies to a church there for distribution directly to victims of Hurricane Katrina. The plan was to accept donations until the trailer filled up, then bring in another trailer until people stopped coming. Pictured from left are: Lynda Wilkerson, Lewis McQueary, Rev. Sam Burris, Mark Karnes and Gary Spoon.
