Parnells honored with 50th anniversary celebration

From Elaine Bennett
Harmon and Nancy Parnell celebrated 50 happy years of marriage recently and the occasion was marked by family who honored them with a beautiful golden anniversary reception. The event was held on August 12, 2005 at Word of Life Family church where their son Randy and his wife Alisa are their pastors.

Their daughter Mona planned the reception and lavish menu. It was all prepared and kept filled to overflowing with the help of the many family members. A beautiful cake was made by Barbara Overstreet.

"We could feel the love, and see all the hard work that had gone into making this reception an unforgetable event," Nancy and Harmon said afterward. "All our children, their spouses, all of our grandchildren and great-grandchildren were with us. It was wonderful."

They were also happy to be joined by three of Harmon's brothers and his sister: Dell Westerfield and Jesse Parnell from Indianapolis; Allan and Bunny Parnell from Louisville; Lewis and Eleen Parnell and granddaughter Sidney from Columbia. Harmon and Nancy said that having members of their church family there made the event even more special.

Harmon and Nancy married August 9, 1955 in California. Harmon was in the Air Force at Hamilton AFB, CA., when he met Nancy who lived in Sebastopol. They were blessed with two sons and one daughter, Richard, Randy and Mona.

Richard and Donna Parnell live with their children Erica and Nicholas in Advance, NC. David Parnell, Richard's son, and his wife Terry, of Columbia, have two children, Skyler, 4, and Gatlin Thomas, five months.

Randy and Alisa live in Adair County with two children still at home, Beth and Dillon. Their oldest daughter Tiffany also lives nearby with her new husband Brandon Thompson.

Mona and her husband Rick Reeves live in Shelby, NC. Rick is the women's head basketball coach at Gardner Webb University in Boiling Springs, NC. Their daughters, Kim Clark and Crystal Reeves, are his assistant coaches. Kim is married to Matt Clark and they have a beautiful two-year-old daughter, Grace Ann.

Mona and Kim put together a Power Point photo pressentation which told the wonderful story of their lives together. Crystal made placemats using photos of Harmon and Nancy that brought back memories. Tiffany and Brandon helped with the seating and decoration along with Kim, Krystal and Mona. Tiffany, Brandon and Jason Somerville sang "Your Love is Extravagant" by Darrell Evans.

"We thank God for 50 happy years together and pray for many more," Nancy said.
And all who know and love Harmon and Nancy Parnell join them in that prayer.
