CYRUS: Columbia Dairies opens, 1946 CYRUS: CYRUS: Columbia Dairies opens, 1946From the Adair County News, August 28, 1946 Columbia Dairies ready to open The Columbia Dairies, organized here last April, is now ready for production and W.J. Cundiff, manager of the new project, announces that the first deliveries will be made on Tuesday, September 3. The new plant, which is located just off Burkesville Street in the rear of the H.A. Walker residence, is very complete. According to all have inspected it, the dairy is one of the best equipped in Kentucky. All products will be pasteurized and they will sell milk, cream, buttermilk, cottage cheese and sweet cream butter. By next year they expect to make and market their own ice cream. A pure milk supply is a great asset to any community and it is fortunate that a pasteurization plant has been started in Columbia. Without question the new business will prove not only a great success but an asset to the town. Ads which appeared in the August 28 & September 4 editions stated the products would be "Delivered Daily At Your Door Monday Thru Saturday." An earlier article, in the March 20, 1946 edition of the News, stated that the stockholders of Columbia Dairies, Inc. had elected as temporary directors the following men: S.C. Bybee, R.L. Wethington, W.J. Cundiff, J.L. Walker and James Lewis Moore; and that the directors had elected W.J. Cundiff as President, R.L. Wethington as Vice President, and S.C. Bybee as Secretary & Treasurer. A follow up in the May 14, 1947 edition of the News stated that the "... business is now expanding rapidly and that deliveries of products are being made daily to Jamestown and Russell Springs. As soon as possible the firm plans to extend this service to all neighboring towns where there are no processing plants." A couple of years later, the February 2, 1949 edition of the News reported that new equipment had been installed at Columbia Dairies, and that was now "one of the best equipped of its size in Kentucky..." Among the additions were a soaker type bottle washer and "a 300 gallon spray pasteurizer which is the last word in modern equipment." The public was cordially invited to attend an open house on February 4th to "inspect the facilities of the plant." CYRUS Central Ohio Bureau Chief This story was posted on 2005-08-28 01:00:00
