New Sutphen Ladder Truck is here; training in progress
Two photos with this story The new Columbia Fire Department Sutphen ladder truck arrived at 5:30 p.m., last night, Friday, August 26, 2005.It was driven from the Sutphen Company's plant in Columbus, OH, five and a half hours from Columbia, by Harry Sutphen and Richard Druman, who are staying today, Saturday, August 27, and tomorrow, Sunday, August 28, 2005 to train the Columbia-Adair County firemen to operate the truck. The firemen will be trained and will be ready to fight fires with the new truck on Monday, August 29, 2005, Columbia VFD Chief Mike Glasgow said. Saturday, at around noon, two firemen at a time were taking turns riding the ladder at full extension. Tony Grider got the honor of being the first Pedestal Operator at the controls of the ladder and bucket on the truck. Chief Glasgow said that no one from the local department has yet driven the truck. Harry Sutphen is a fifth generation member of the Columbus fire truck builders who have been in business 115 years. He pointed out that the Columbia truck has a center pedestal mount which was invented by his Uncle, Tom Sutphen. The center mount allows much easier access for the firefighters, and is safer because of of the improved stability. The training exercises were taking place in the Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home Parking lot diagonally across Merchant Street from the fire station. When the City Council voted to approve the purchase by the Columbia-Adair County Fire Department of a $747,065 ladder truck, Mayor Patrick R. Bell said, "This is a great day for Columbia." "The truck is ours," Chief Glasgow said. "It is fully paid for." Sometime in October there will be an open house to show off the newly renovated fire house, the new ladder truck, and other fire fighting equipment. The date is yet to be announced.
