Adair Co. Extension Agent: Beef herd expansion continues By David Herbst Adair County Extension Agent for Agriculture COLUMBIA, KY. (AUGUST 23, 2005) On July 22nd USDA released its semi-annual estimate of the U.S. cattle inventory. For the most part, estimates came in quite close to expectations. Total cattle and calf numbers were estimated to be 104.5 million, just shy of 1% above the 2004 estimate. The number of beef cows in the U.S. herd was estimated to be up 0.75% from last year at 33.75 million cows. The number of milk cows was up just over one-half a percent. The July numbers also provided the first official estimate of the 2005 calf crop. As expected, the calf crop is likely to be larger this year, but only by 175,000 calves (+0.46%). As herd expansion continues, each years calf crop will likely be larger than the previous year. The number of beef cows held for cow replacement increased another 4% since 2004. This is evidence that herd expansion is continuing in 2005 and suggests that the number of beef cows in production will be greater in 2006. The all important feeder cattle supply outside U.S. feedlots was estimated to be just under 40 million. This represents a very small increase from July 1, 2004. Total cattle on feed in the U.S. was estimated to be 12 million head, which was up 2% from the previous.
