As school begins, so does the fight against drugs in Adair County

Adair County Substance Abuse Coalition, Champions for a Drug-FreeKentucky met for the first time in the new school year on Thursday,August 4 at its regular monthly meeting location, Lindsey Wilson CollegeStudent Union Building (SUB). The Coalition met to plan educational and preventive activities for youth and the community at large.
This voluntary community organization represents leaders from all walks of life who, through collaborative efforts within the community, work to educate our youth and community about substance abuse issues, prevention strategies and how to get help for yourself or a loved one who may be dealing with substance abuse issues.

The Coalition works very closely with regional and state agencies; theAdanta Regional Prevention Center (RPC) located in Somerset, theKentucky Office for Drug Control Policy and Champions for a Drug-FreeKentucky both located in Frankfort. One way this is accomplished is by bringing grant monies into Adair County schools and the community at large for the prevention of substance abuse.

Ellen Zornes, Title IV, Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities coordinator, and Coalition chair, presented the agenda for the coming year which calls for continued grant writing as well as special events to involve families in substance abuse prevention activities.

The new SRO (School Resource Officer) John Partin, was introduced. He is an Adair County Deputy Sheriff, who will be working with the two otherSRO officers; Deputy Don Knifley and Deputy Alan King and with SheriffSteve Cheatham. The SROs are in uniform on site at the schools and are an important part of the school community. They play a vital role in the schools through interacting with students, mentoring students and presenting important substance abuse and law enforcement educational information to students as well as being a presence for order and a direct link to law enforcement.
