Jamie Salyers is new youth leader at Columbia UMC By George Kolbenschlag "I believe our youth understand the world and are deeper thinkers than we sometimes give them credit for. They are plugged in to the world..." - JS Casey county native and Lindsey Wilson graduate Jamie Salyers has been selected as director of the children's and youth program at Columbia United Methodist Church. Salyers brings broad experience to the church's program. He earned his master of arts in Christian leadership, bachelors of arts degrees in both history and Christian ministries and an associate's degree in social science at Lindsey Wilson College. While at Lindsey Wilson, Salyers also served as an assistant chaplain and bookstore clerk. Since his graduation from Lindsey Wilson in 2010 he served at Richmond UMC for five years as multi-ministry center director. He also served as youth director of Berea UMC for five years and taught social studies at Lincoln County middle school. Salyers' favorite book of the Bible is the Gospel of John. "I just like to read John and every time I do I find something new," he says. His favorite bible quote is Galatians 2:20. When asked, "What brought you to Columbia?," he said, "I wanted to return to church ministry. My last position was mostly administrative and the thing I enjoy most is working with students. I am familiar with this area. I attended this church often when I was a student at the college, and I'm glad to be able to serve the children and youth of the church." He adds, "I believe our youth understand the world and are deeper thinkers than we sometimes give them credit for. They are plugged in to the world... They care about each other, and they are just a lot of fun to work with. They are just looking for places they can be themselves. The church is a great place to find that. It's not easy for them. For some, there are mental health issues, and a lot of feeling of loneliness and detachment. This generation is in deep need for a place like Columbia United Methodist Church. "I believe the main thing is just to be there for them. To be part of their lives to go to their games, concerts, visit them in their homes, make sure they know you care. Just show up just to be there for them. They need to know they are loved, not only by you and the members of this church, but by an amazing God who gave his life for them. I think that's the purpose of my job is to love them and be there for them. To be their cheerleader and their friend." Sunday School is at 9amCT and church service starts at 10am each Sunday, 202 Burkesville Street, Columbia. Find more on the Facebook page at Columbia United Methodist Church.
