Kentucky Color: The Monkey Trap By Billy Joe Fudge Each day in the woods is another chance for new and different experiences. This one on the bank of a Denton Branch tributary, just East of Snake Creek Road, has to be right up there at the top of the "different" list! I'm sure you've heard of the monkey trap. Put a banana in a jar and when the monkey grabs it, he can't get his fist back out of the jar. It looks like to me that this situation must be akin to that scenario. From all appearances, I believe this Red tail hawk caught a squirrel just as the squirrel entered the hole. In his struggle to pull the squirrel back out of the hole, he slid down the ever narrowing crack and the rest is history. I would hazard a guess that the prey died in the death grip of the predator's talons which was a more humane death than starvation. This story was posted on 2022-03-30 10:27:22
