Power outage, snow storm and time change Monday's weather will be sunny, warm and calm, you'd never know the weekend freezing, sleet and snow storm happened. By Linda Waggener What a weekend - plenty of stress, both expected and unexpected! We experienced a power outage and a snow storm on top of losing an hour in the time change. As everyone focused on preparations for the predicted snow, power suddenly went out Friday around 6:30pm - just as I was watching news of the tragic war against Ukraine and thinking how easily the blessings we enjoy every day can be taken away. Power was taken away all over downtown and in New Columbia/Greater Bliss. We have yet to get word about the different parts of the county, news releases from the power companies are expected. Kentucky Utilities power was restored downtown in a brief time while Taylor County power took several hours to come back on. Vicky Pike saw the Parkway lights come on near the nine o'clock hour as she was coming home from getting her farm water tanks secured for the "girls" before the snow got heavy. In her picture of the Transfer Station, she sends a "thank you" to all those working in the freezing temperatures and rain/sleet. She said something had told her in the sunny, 50-degree afternoon to fill the water tanks just in case the weather reports were right. Freezing rain had already started when she went to cover the water tanks and she said she couldn't imagine how hard it must be to work utilities at the transfer station in such bad weather. The snow started with that sleet. The ground was covered with that ice and snow building on top of it by midnight. By morning one report is that we had seven inches of snow in Columbia. We woke up Saturday morning to a winter wonderland - this was one of the best kinds of snows, puffy and light, every limb outlined, and quick to melt. Sunday was a sunny, warmer day with melting and getting used to having to be at church an hour earlier than last week. This story was posted on 2022-03-14 08:21:32
