Two emergencies, not just one, happened overnight

By Linda Waggener

March 11/12, 2022 -- We were prepared to get snow overnight but we weren't prepared for a power blackout.

Just before 6:30pmCT Miss Vicky Pike texted, "All electric out this way (New Columbia/Walmart) just went out."

That was seconds after my own power (near the Public Square on Fortune Street) had shut down. Her message reminded me I could see to search for the flashlights by the light of the cell phone.

I checked with Ellen and JD Zornes across town and their lights had also gone out.

Electricity in town would be back on within a quarter hour, however, New Columbia lights would be off for over an hour. We will be gathering details as Columbia Magazine readers wake up and check out their windows -- hope it's a beautiful, safe Saturday where you are!

The huge snow that visited this region over the weekend is almost all melted by Monday morning school time. Students will likely think, "what a waste." This picture is from Sunday when winds whipped the snow into drifts and temperatures warmed enough to do some good melting.
