Steve McKinney celebrates 36 years as Adair County's NAPA dealer

The blue and gold building on Campbellsville Street houses one of three NAPA dealerships (in Adair, Russell and Taylor Counties) that are owned and run by Steve McKinney and his family
By Linda Waggener

Steve McKinney celebrated 36 years as the Adair County NAPA dealer in June. He started out in a different industry, getting his license as a mortician working with Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home. Then his brother-in-law Sam Holmes who owned the Jeffersonville, Indiana NAPA dealership, advised him that an Adair County NAPA store would be a great opportunity. Steve listened to the advice, looked into it, and the rest is history.

"Sam helped me at age 26 to secure the store here in Columbia," Steve said, "then an older friend told me that the more you put into your business the more you get out of it -- and I've found those words to be very true." Business went well in Adair County and Steve added the Russell Springs NAPA store 17 years ago, and Campbellsville location 12 years ago."Every year has showed positive growth," he said, "and last year was another great one." Overall he employs 24-25 people year-round.

Steve's wife Nancy works with him every morning and then goes to her own business, Glamoretta Beauty Salon, every afternoon. Their son Barry works in the Columbia store along with Steve, taking care of customers. Daughter Ann works in bookkeeping. She and her husband Brad Keltner have two children, Jacob age 9 and Stevie age 5.

After work is done, Steve can be found on the golf course at Pinewood doing what he enjoys most in his spare time. Recently he participated in the Chamber of Commerce golf tournament where he says he ran into Dr. Bobby Goodin. "He advised me that golfing and going to the gym arent enough, and he prescribed that I walk three miles every day." Steve took his advice and is upping his activity. He has a keen appreciation for life and says its worth it to try and take care of himself.

He is a board member of the new United Citizens Bank and shared that they have already grown past their first-year goal in only six months. They stand at $42 million right now and are projecting $60 million by year end.

He is Chairman of the Board of Trinity United Methodist Church.

"Adair County has a great future," Steve says, "with all the funding coming our way, we can't help but grow."
