Little church on the county line grows into huge Life Development Center

Asbury United Methodist Church will open its Worship and Life Development Center this Sunday, July 10, with a special worship service
The public is invited to the service (11 a.m. eastern/ 10 a.m. central time) featuring Wayne and Pam Combs, Renfro Valley artists, as guest singers. Asbury's new building is strategically located on Kentucky 55 in TaylorCounty, just across the Adair County line and less than two miles from theGreen County line.

"This will be a time of celebration, an opportunity for us to express ourgratitude for our vendors and our supporters," said Asbury UMC Pastor Don Watson.

The Worship and Life Development Center, which is almost 14,000 square feet, features a sanctuary that can seat up to 300 people. It is located on 9.7 acres of land that is directly across the highway from where the church's congregation has worshiped since 1903.

Under Watson's leadership, Asbury UMC has become a regional church, drawing members from Adair, Green and Taylor counties and making it one of the fastest-growing United Methodist congregations in South Central Kentucky.

"We reached a point where we simply needed a new building in order tocomfortably accommodate all of the new members we have attracted fromthroughout South Central Kentucky," said Watson, who has been the church's pastor since 1988.

To meet the church's growing needs, the congregation conducted a feasibility study and then hired an architect to develop building plans. In November 2003, Asbury UMC launched a fund-raising campaign, "To God Be The Glory." A total of $222,790 was pledged in letters of intent, to be paid over a three-year period, Watson said.

"What a joy it is to pastor a church whose primary mission is to provide aministry for the wounded, the downcast, those who are frustrated or confused and where everyone can experience God's unconditional love," he said."That's what Asbury does, and that is why I feel so good about what Asbury has to offer."
