Shepherds hope to see improved care of Adair cemeteries Mr. and Mrs. Morris Shepherd were able to smile at the picture of contentment made by Mr. Joseph Burton when they stopped to see his mule-pulled-slide. They wrote us that it was good to lighten up because they were starting home, to Ohio from their holiday in Adair County, feeling down about 'the deplorable conditions of some of our cemeteries.' "We visited two in particular that disturbed us," Shepherd said, "My wife's great grandfather is buried on his family farm (not presently owned by the family). The cemetery is on a hilltop with trees all around it. Cattle have knocked down the fence to spend most hot summer days in the shade in the cemetery. As a consequence, most of the grave markers have been broken and cow droppings cover the ground and the markers." He continued, "My ancestor was a Revolutionary war soldier buried four to five miles outside Columbia in a plot that his family owned. This cemetery has been desecrated just as the above mentioned one. No stones are standing and the ones one the ground are difficult to find. They are all covered with cow manure. How sad that we have not honored our fallen heroes from the past!" The Shepherds are searching for individuals or groups to work with in effort to restore the old cemeteries. He has spoken with officers of the Adair County Genealogy Society, with funeral home personnel and with the person at Lindsey Wilson who is in charge of the Lindsey Community Work Day projects but says he has gotten no positive feedback.
