Metcalfe County shooting: 3 officers injured, 1 suspect dead

Update June 2, 2005: All three injured officers have been released from the hospital and are at home now but the second shooter, 82-year-old Albert Coomer, remains in the hospital.
(EDMONTON, KY) - On Tuesday, May 31, 2005, at approximately 3:11 p.m. the Kentucky State Police and Metcalfe County Sheriff's Department responded to 1591 Bridgeport Road, located five (5) miles east of Edmonton in Metcalfe County, to serve arrest warrants on Mr. James Allen Coomer, 42 years of age. The warrants had been issued in Barren County for Assault 4th Degree, Burglary 1st Degree, and Violation of a Domestic Violence Order. Upon Trooper Andy Olson and Deputy Sheriff Kevin Thompson's approach to the residence, Mr. Coomer was observed fleeing the residence, armed with a rifle.

Mr. Coomer fired the weapon at both officers, wounding Trooper Olson. Deputy Thompson engaged the suspect and returned fire, wounding the suspect. Mr. Coomer was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:35 p.m. CDT by the Metcalfe County coroner.

A short time after the first shooting, a second suspect (James Allen's 82-year-old father, Albert) exited the residence and began firing at Deputy Thompson and Edmonton Police Chief, Tony Harris, who had arrived on the scene to assist. The officers returned fire, wounding the second suspect. Both Deputy Thompson and Chief Harris were wounded during the gunfire.

Trooper Olson, Deputy Thompson, and Chief Harris were transported to the University of Louisville Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Trooper Olson sustained wounds to his left arm, Deputy Thompson sustained an injury to his head and Chief Harris sustained an injury to his right arm. All three remain at University of Louisville Hospital, undergoing treatment.

The second suspect was also transported to the University of Louisville Hospital for medical treatment.

The investigation into the incident is on-going and criminal charges against the second suspect are pending.

Trooper Andy Olson began his Kentucky State Police career in October 2004.
