The best video ever

By Linda Waggener

Geese in great numbers were circling in the bright blue sky over The Homeplace on Green River farm Sunday afternoon.

I pulled onto the winding drive that goes down to the event barn and shut the car off. I could hear them honking and see them soaring on the stiff November breeze above the barns and silo.

It was visual feast.

They were moving in circles, not the familiar V pattern, just floating on the air currents, circling in no specific pattern.

I tried a couple of pictures. Then I moved the cell phone camera to the video option and followed their sound and movement. So beautiful, talking to each other, soaring.

My instinct was to fly right up and join them and ask, where are you all headed, where's your next stopping place? Are you going to the lake? Will you stop at Sapp's pond in Columbia?

I felt sure this was going to be a most awesome video of their beautiful moves and compelling sound.

It was a joyful few moments and I could hardly wait to post it and share with Columbia Magazine readers. National Geographic would probably be calling.

I glanced down to see how many seconds had passed.

I looked again, then again. No seconds had passed. I'd never pressed play.

The best video ever was never filmed.

Some of those sounds from above were probably geese laughing as they headed south.

Geese over Homeplace on Green River

2021-11-28 - Taylor County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener.
Between the jet plane on the left and the silo rail on the right are great numbers of geese traveling south, flying over the Homeplace on Green River. You have to squint to see them in the photo. It should have been an awesome video of their beautiful moves and compelling sounds. - LW
