Martin charged with murder after Popplewell, 78, dies

Robert L. Martin of Columbia, driving under the influence on the evening of Sunday, May 1, 2005, ran a stop sign in the Salem community of Russell County and hit the 1993 Ford Tempo carrying Ollis C. and Vonnie Popplewell. Theywere transported to the local hospital but Mr. Popplewell had to be sent on to Lexington. He died there yesterday, resulting in a charge of murder for Robert Martin.


Martin, 42, who was driving a 1982 Chevrolet, was charged at the scene with driving under the influence and assault, no operator license and no insurance.

He had two other passengers in his car: Quincy McQueary and Leah Marlow, both of Russell Springs.

No information was available at this time about injuries that might have been received by other passengers.

Martin who listed his address as Buell Collins Road in southeastern Adair County is lodged in the Russell County Jail on $100,000 bond.

Deputy Tim Pierce investigated the accident.
