Happy 95th birthday Elsa Lewis Bryant

By Linda Waggener

Elsa Bryant says she is thankful to the good Lord for her health and abilities as she nears birthday number 95 this coming May 23, 2005.

Unlike many in her age group she is still driving and enjoying an independent lifestyle. And unlike many in her age group, Elsa Lewis Bryant looks like she belongs more in the 70-something age range rather than in the 90s.

One acquaintance told Elsa recently, "you don't look a day older than you did back when you first became my Avon lady" Elsa replied with her good sense of humor, "well, I must have looked 94 way back then."

She also applies her sense of humor when people mistakenly call her "Elsie" Bryant. She doesn't make a big deal about it, however, she does explain when she has a chance, it's "El-sa." She said she once asked a friend whose name was Thelma how she'd feel if people called her "Thelmie." It made it easier to relate to then. Her friends help make sure she is introduced by her proper name.

The daughter of Otis and Mattie Lewis of the Glens Fork community, she has outlived her parents as well as her brothers and sisters. "I'm the only one remaining," she says,"and I often wondered what my family would have done if I'd not been there to help see to their needs since my brothers and sisters lived up north." She took care of both her parents and her husband for their lifetimes.

She remembered, "Dad was the first person to own and operate a school bus in Adair County. He hauled kids to the Columbia High School until the county began buying its own busses, then he stayed on as a driver for them."

Elsa has a son, Delano, and daughter-in-law Nancy McLean Bryant in Florida. Her daughter, Jolene and son-in-law David Callison live in Louisville. Her grandson Davey and two great-grandsons also live in Louisville.

We join her family and friends in saying, "Happy 95th Birthday Elsa Bryant!"
