Jobless rates down in 95 counties from March 2004 to March 2005

FRANKFORT, Ky. (May 4, 2005) - Unemployment rates fell in 95 Kentuckycounties between March 2004 and March 2005, rose in 21 counties and stayedthe same in four counties, according to the Kentucky Office of Employmentand Training in the Education Cabinet.

Adair County stayed in third place among the Greater Adair County area.

The employment picture for Adair County was good for third place in the seven-county area, as shown in this chart:

Adair County's unemployment fell, as did the unemployment in all the other area counties except for Green County, where joblessness rose from 6.7% to 7.0 %..

Russell County's jobs picture improved, and The County's ranking rose above Green County.

In Adair County, there were 7,474 persons employed out of a civilian work force of 7,952.

In March 2005, five counties had jobless rates at or above 10percent, and nine counties recorded double-digit rates in March 2004.Woodford and Oldham counties' 4 percent jobless rates were the lowest in thecommonwealth.

Other low rates were recorded in Shelby County, 4.1 percent;Boone, Fayette and Jessamine counties, 4.4 percent each; Spencer County, 4.6percent; and Anderson, Franklin and Warren counties, 4.7 percent each.

Magoffin County recorded the state's highest unemployment rate - 13.1percent. It was followed by Wolfe County, 10.8 percent; Elliott and Morgancounties, 10.4 percent each; Nicholas County, 10 percent; Lewis County, 9.8percent; Graves County, 9.7 percent; Menifee County, 9.3 percent; McCrearyCounty 8.9 percent; and Carter County, 8.8 percent.

Unemployment statistics are based on estimates and are compiled tomeasure trends rather than actually to count people working.

Civilian labor force statistics include non-military workers and unemployed Kentuckians whoare actively seeking work. They do not include unemployed Kentuckians whohave not looked for employment within the past four weeks.

The statistics inthis news release are not seasonally adjusted to allow for comparisonsbetween United States, state and counties figures.
