Telemarketers working Columbia are making false claims

The Chamber of Commerce reports that a telemarketer is falsly claiming to be selling advertising for a "community guide magnet" that is a community project of the Chamber of Commerce. They warn local businesses and organizations that this is not true. In a letter from Executive Director Sue Stivers, she outlines exactly how to spot and avoid dishonest solicitors.

Dear Chamber Members,

I have had several telephone calls asking if the Chamber is sponsoring a project concerning selling advertising. There is a woman in town that is selling advertising for a "community guide" magnet that can be placed on your refrigerator, or another appliance that lists important telephone numbers for emergencies, etc. She is telling business people that she is selling this advertisement as a community project of the Chamber of Commerce.

This is not true! The Chamber is NOT sponsoring any project of this nature.

When the Chamber is sponsoring a project, that person selling the advertising will have a letter from the Chamber President or Executive Director certifying this is their project. When you are approached to buy advertising, ask them to see the letter from the Chamber.

These Companies take our money out of the County, when we could keep the money here in Adair County as we have businesses that can do the same work as companies out of County and out of State.

You are encouraged to call the Chamber Office for information when approached to buy advertising. If you have any questions, please call the Chamber office at 384-6020.

Thanks,
Sue Stivers
Executive Director
