Lindsey Wilson College cross country, track and field coach Gary Stoner was found dead by his players late Friday morning.
Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home shares word that services for Gary Neil Stoner will be in Michigan on Thursday, April 28, 2005. Go to the end of the story for the full obituary.
Stoner, 58, who joined the college in August 2004, was discovered after his players became concerned that their coach had not shown up to campus on Friday morning. Lindsey Wilson's track & field team was scheduled to travel to Richmond, Ky., on Friday and compete in the Eastern Kentucky University Spring Meet.

When the players discovered Stoner's body at his residence, 104 Church Street, they called 911. Shortly thereafter, Columbia City Police arrived on the scene, and after seeing Stoner's body contacted Adair County Coroner Rick Wilson, who pronounced Stoner dead.

The cause of death is unknown, but Stoner apparently died of natural causes. Stoner appeared to be in good health the last time he was seen by his team, following Thursday's practice.

The Blue Raiders were scheduled to compete in the Cardinal Open on Saturday at the University of Louisville.

"The Lindsey Wilson family mourns the loss of one of its members today," said Lindsey Wilson President William T. Luckey Jr. "Gary made a lasting impact on our college community and the student-athletes he coached."

The college's Student Life and Campus Ministry offices provided counseling on Friday afternoon and evening to members of the school's cross country and track & fields teams.

An interim cross country and track & field coach will be named soon, according to Lindsey Wilson Director of Athletics Willis Pooler. Pooler said the college plans to have a permanent cross country and track & field coach in place when the 2005-06 school year begins in August.

"Gary's office was right across from mine," Pooler said. "He was a good man and a great colleague. He was a consummate professional who loved his sport and his student-athletes."

Stoner had overseen one of the best cross country and track & field seasons in Lindsey Wilson's history. He was responsible for the school's first NAIA national title in indoor track when Lindsey Wilson freshman Anine Stanley won the racewalk title at the 2005 NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships. Also at the meet, the Lindsey Wilson men's and women's track and field teams both earned top-20 finishes.

Earlier this month, Lindsey Wilson set five school records while competing in the prestigious 39th-annual Sea Ray Relays on the campus of the University of Tennessee.

Stoner came to Lindsey Wilson after serving as the head cross country and track & field coach at Central Methodist (Mo.) College for six seasons.

"Lindsey Wilson is a dynamic college with outstanding tradition and leadership," Stoner said when he accepted the coaching job on August 12. "I believe this is a great opportunity for me personally and professionally, and I look forward to the challenges that lie ahead of me."

In his six years at Central Methodist, Stoner produced 36 NAIA All-Americans, including 15 national champions in track & field. His 2004 women's track & field team finished eighth in both the NAIA Indoor and Outdoor national championships.

Stoner was an assistant at University of Mary (N.D.), head coach at Kalaheo High School in Hawaii and head coach at Harper Creek High School in Michigan.
