Gary Dean Blakey, 70, Elizabethtown, KY (1950-2021)

Gary Dean Blakey of Elizabethtown passed away on Sunday, August 22, 2021, at Baptist Health - Hardin. He was 70 years old.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2pmCT on Thursday, August 26, 2021, at Bernard Funeral Home, 367 N. Main St., Russell Springs, KY, with Rev. David Blair officiating. Burial will follow in Blakey Cemetery at Hayes Chapel.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 26, 2021, after 11amCT, until time for services.

The Blakey Family requests facial coverings be worn by everyone in attendance.


He was born on December 19, 1950, to the late Rev. Luther Garvin "L.G." and Reba Stearns Blakey. Gary was a retired schoolteacher and basketball coach in the Hardin County School System for 27 years. He was involved in the Emmaus, Gideons and his church. He was also a photographer and videographer.

After retiring in 2000, Gary and his wife, Mary, moved back to Russell County, where he served as coach driver for the Blakey Quartet. He became a building contractor, building several houses and a church family life center. About a year ago, they relocated back to Elizabethtown.

Gary is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Mary Aaron Blakey; two children, Janna (Carl) Watt, of Jacksonville, Florida, and Brandon (Kayla) Blakey, of Elizabethtown; and grandchildren, Natalie and Cara Watt, of Florida, and Carson Dean Blakey, of Elizabethtown. Other survivors include; five brothers, David (Vickie) Blakey, Dennis (Dana) Blakey, of Russell Springs, Lonnie Blakey, Keith (Gina) Blakey, Jr. (Deidre) Blakey, all of Jamestown; and one sister, Belinda (Bill) Hoover, of Jamestown.

He is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews, and very special friends, Loy and Phyllis Brashear, of Elizabethtown.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gideons International for Bible placement.
