ACHS Cheerleaders bring home another trophy Coaches Cleo Shivley and Julie McQueary couldn't be more proud of the ACHS Cheerleaders for being selected as the 6th runners-up from their second trip to the CANAM National cheerleading competition in Myrtle Beach. From Coach Julie McQuearyThe Adair Co. High School Cheerleaders left out Wednesday night on their 2nd trip to the CANAM National cheerleading competition held in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The squad qualified to compete in this competition back in December when they won the regional qualifier at the CANAM Central KY Cheer and Dance Open. The squad was very excited about this trip. Last year they placed 9th and were very happy to make it in the top 10 with it being their first trip to a national competition. This year they set the goal higher. On Saturday the squad was going through the final warm-ups before going on to the floor, with less than 5 minutes until they competed, Sarah Martin was hurt while practicing her tumbling. Nobody realizing the extent of her injury, and Sarah not letting on just how bad it was, went on to the floor to compete for 2 _ minutes. The squad did a good job. That night the girls made changes to the routine that we felt would better their scores the next day, all along not knowing if Sarah would ever be able to compete that second day, and wondering if they would have to make changes to the entire routine if she was not able to do it. On Sunday, the stress level was very high among the squad. They knew they had a lot to do that day, and with the looks of Sarahs hand and knee, still were not sure about her. But Sarah assured them she would be competing regardless. The trainer on site wrapped her hand to help her get through the competition. At 2:20 Sunday afternoon the squad went onto the floor and gave the performance of a lifetime. When they came off the floor the excitement was so overwhelming that all everyone could do was hug each other and cry. Never had the coaches and parents been so proud of a group of girls. That afternoon when awards were given out we were very excited about being the 6th runner up. The squad had been told that it didnt matter if we got 1st place or last place; as long as they did their very best and had no regrets, they were winners! And that is what they did! The performance of a lifetime and getting as high as 6th runner up was an accomplishment for anyone. We just wanted to place higher than last year and that is what they did. Next year we will place even higher! In a few years Adair Co. High School Cheerleaders will be National Champions! Although, they are already champions in the eyes of their coaches, parents and families. A special thank you goes out to the families of this squad for their support during the competition. The excitement that they had for the squad before and during competition was unbelievable. We all know who the REAL winners of the fan frenzy contest were!! Updates: Sarah Martin has a broken hand. We all thank her and admire her dedication to the squad. Miriam Vanarsdale competed on Friday in the individual competition. She placed 11th out of 27. She had an out standing performance.
