Leaving Green, Heading West, Valley Of Fire, NV, Day 1

By Robert Ellis
Robert Ellis Woodworking

It's been a dream for some time now to see the west...specifically Zion National Park in Utah. I have expressed this desire to fellow photographer and Columbia Magazine contributor William Lamkin many times over the last couple years; you'll get to see some of his pics from the trip over the next several days.

Las Vegas is in relatively close proximity to several National parks. So after research was done on how cheap the flights and hotel packages were for a week at Vegas, the dream began to take shape.

Tammy and I met with William and his wife Samantha and agreed to do the trip together...and so it began. It was a dream come true!

The itinerary would be as follows: Day 1, Valley Of Fire, Nevada State Park. Day 2, Grand Canyon, AZ. Day 3, Old Gold Mining/Ghost Town, Nelson, NV, Day 4, Zion National Park, UT, and last Day 5, Red Rock Canyon, NV

Hope you enjoy! --Robert

Valley Of Fire, Nevada State Park, Day 1: Big Horn

2021-04-13 - Valley of Fire, NV - Photo by William Lamkin.
William writes, "As Robert and I sauntered through the valley of fire looking for pictures, I said that it would be great to get a picture of the big horn sheep that roam wild in the canyon. Just as I said it one topped the hill! Thats about as close as I could get with the lens that I had on. Do you see it?"

Valley Of Fire, Nevada State Park, Day 1: Pastel Canyon

2021-04-15 - Valley Of Fire, Nevada State Park - Photo by Robert Ellis, Robert Ellis Woodworking.com.
Robert writes, "Pastel Canyon is a little off the beaten path in the Valley Of Fire State Park. Before the trip I had done some research on how to find this spot, and where to pull over in the vehicle to access it, since it's not marked. It's a short, easy hike and well worth the effort. Those that find it are rewarded with stunning colors and beauty around every turn..."

The palette of pastel

William writes, "Around every corner the canyon displays an amazing array of color blended into the stone canvas. Our first day of adventure will soon be over as we marvel at the strokes of the Masters paintbrush."

Leaving Green, Heading West, Nelson Nevada (Day2)

2021-04-22 - Nelson, NV - Photo by Robert Ellis, Robert Ellis Woodworking.com.
Robert writes, "On day two of our trip, William and I headed out of Vegas and drove a little over 40 miles to the old Techatticup Gold Mine in the town of Nelson (or what's left of the town). At one time it was the oldest, richest and most famous gold mine in Southern Nevada, and it's located in scenic Eldorado Canyon.

Our target was a collection of vintage cars, buildings and relics that had been collected over the years, assembled and placed in such a way as to attract tourists, photographers, or just about anyone who wants to step back in time...to get a glimpse of the old west. Hollywood, with a couple of movies, magazine shoots, weddings, and speaking with the owner, photographers from all over the world have visited the place. Nevertheless we were still both elated to have such an opportunity to walk around and play the photographer!"

Nelson, Nevada

2021-04-24 - Nelson, NV - Photo by William Lamkin.
William writes, "There are photo opportunities everywhere walking around in Nelson, but there are also rattlesnakes and a plethora of mean cactus that seem to jump out and get you. And they will get you good!

It was hot and dry but we found gold in them hills! Just not the kind of gold you're thinking of."

Leaving Green, Heading West: Farewell Nelson Nevada

William writes, "I wonder if the old general store had a pot belly stove that the miners would sit around and play checkers while they sipped on a RC Cola?"
