Adair unemployment up slightly in December; still low
Adair County's unemployment rate is below the 5.1% for the U.S. nationwide, and very slightly below the statewide average of 4.2% unemployment for the period. Metcalfe County remained the leader in employment in the 7-county area which includes Adair and surrounding counties, but was no longer the state leader in unemployment. Oldham County, with only 2% unemployed, and Fayette County, with 2.5%, has better rates than Metcalfe's very strong 2.6%. Adair County had 316 listed on the unemployment rolls in December, with 7,449 employment out of a countywide civilian labor force of 7,765. (Jan. 31, 2005) - Unemployment rates dropped in 104 Kentuckycounties between December 2003 and December 2004, rose in 11 counties andfive counties stayed the same, according to the Kentucky Office ofEmployment and Training in the Education Cabinet. In December 2004, four counties had jobless rates at or above 10percent, and seven counties recorded double-digit rates in December 2003. Woodford County's 2 percent jobless rate was the lowest in the commonwealth. Other low rates were recorded in Oldham County, 2.4 percent; Fayette County,2.5 percent; Metcalfe County, 2.6 percent: Franklin and Shelby counties, 2.7percent each; Anderson and Jackson counties, 2.8 percent each; and Jessamineand Warren counties, 2.9 percent each. Nicholas County recorded the state's highest unemployment rate - 13.2percent. It was followed by Elliott County, 11 percent; Lewis County, 10.8percent; Magoffin County, 10.3 percent; Carter County, 9.9 percent; MorganCounty, 8.8 percent; McCreary County, 8.4 percent; Robertson and Wolfecounties, 7.7 percent each; and McLean County, 7.5 percent. Unemployment statistics are based on estimates and are compiled tomeasure trends rather than actually to count people working. Civilian laborforce statistics include non-military workers and unemployed Kentuckians whoare actively seeking work. They do not include unemployed Kentuckians whohave not looked for employment within the past four weeks.
