Judge Vaughan hand carries Metcalfe Fiscal Court Ok to Columbia

  • Green River Animal Shelter contract gets unanimous approval from Metcalfe Magistrates, enthusiastic endorsement of Judge D.M. Butler II
  • Pressure now on G.R.A.W.L. to get grant application to Frankfort by Monday, January 31, 2005
  • A new day of cooperation between the counties

Following the a unanimous approval by the Metcalfe County Fiscal Court, at its 9:00 a.m. meeting this morning, Tuesday, January 25, 2005, the contract between Adair and Metcalfe Counties for the joint operation of the Green River Animal Shelter was signed by Metcalfe County Judge D.M. Butler, II.

Originally, the contract was to have been delivered to Columbia, but to avoid any possible delay, Adair County Judge Jerry Vaughan drove to Edmonton and personally picked up the the paperwork to give to Ellen Zornes of the Green River Animal Welfare League (G.R.A.W.L.) for inclusion in the $150,000 grant application which must be dlelivered to Frankfort no later than Monday, January 31, 2005.

Because Metcalfe County accepted the contract as written, a special meeting was not necesssary for the Adair Fiscal Court, which means that valuable time in the grant application process has been saved.

Judge Butler said he was very pleased with the contract. "Not only the unkind treatment of unwanted animals will be curtailed to a great extent, but as well, there will now be an appropriate place for the humane disposition of these animals,"

He added, "We are very fortunate to be able to go into partnership with Adair County on such a great project for both counties."

Judge Butler had high praise for his court for the progressive action, and recognized the four men who made this possible: Metcalfe County Magistrates Jesse Harper, Dale Rowlett, Greg White, and Barry Dean Steel.

The contract calls for Metcalfe County to contribute $27,500 to the cost of operation of the shelter. Two of the shelter's five member governoring will be from Metcalfe County, two will be named by the Adair County Fiscal Court, and one wil be named by G.R.A.W.L.

Judge Butler noted that progress across the county lines will be continuing with this project as well as future ones, including a multi-county Agr-Tourism center to be located in the old Louie B. Nunn Parkway Toll Plaza office at Edmonton. Adair County is to be one of the participants.
