Lindsey Campus Ministry Center opens

When Lindsey Wilson College students return to classes next week, one more building will be at their disposal.

After a little more than eight months of construction, the Sumner Campus Ministry Center will be opened to students when Lindsey Wilson's 2005 spring semester gets under way on Monday.

The one-story, 3,000-square-foot building -- which is located behind Goodhue Science Building -- will house Lindsey Wilson's burgeoning campus ministries program, including the college's Christian ministries major.

"This building creates avenues for additional ministry to happen in new and exciting ways on our campus," said Lindsey Wilson Chaplain Troy Elmore. "It's going to expand our outreach possibilities and how we minister to our students."

Elmore is one of two Lindsey Wilson staff members who will feel the greatest impact of the Sumner Center. Before the building was opened, Elmore shared a cramped office with Assistant Chaplain Courtney Stevens-Baughn in the basement of the John B. Begley Chapel.

In addition to Elmore and Stevens-Baughn, the basement of the Begley Chapel also included offices for Dean of the Chapel Terry Swan and United Methodist Columbia District Superintendent Paul Fryman.

"It could get pretty crowded when eight to 10 workstudy students were down there as well," Stevens-Baughn said. "It was a real challenge to meet all of our students' needs in that kind of situation."

Now Elmore's and Stevens-Baughn's offices are located in the Sumner Center where they will have more space to minister to students.

"This new building will help us carry out our ministry more effectively by simply giving us more space to do it," Stevens-Baughn said.

Elmore said the new building will also provide the college's campus ministers more opportunity to meet with students individually.

"One of the things I've wanted to do more of is have more one-on-one discipling of students and mentoring of students," he said. "This building creates a place where that can happen more easily."

The Sumner Center is named in honor of Wally and Mary Sumner, parents of Pat Hodge of Smithfield, Ky. Hodge is the wife of Lindsey Wilson trustee Vernon Hodge. The Sumner Center features two assembly rooms, two offices, a prayer room, and a student lounge that will hold a small library and be used for meetings, study groups and other events.

Lindsey Wilson's campus ministries program includes three weekly worship services, three weekly prayer services, seven student groups and more than a dozen Bible study groups. The college's 10:30 a.m. Wednesday chapel will still be held in the Begley Chapel, but other groups will have the opportunity to take advantage of the Sumner Center, Elmore said.

"This building will give all of our student groups a centralized place where people can plug in," Elmore said. "This will be a place where students can congregate and gather together in small groups."

Elmore noted that the Sumner Center is also a welcomed addition to the college's Christian ministries program, which now boasts more than 90 students as either majors or minors in the program.

"Our program is growing so rapidly, so this building will give the Christian ministries program some more visibility on campus and in the community," Elmore said.

The Sumner Center will also serve the community by providing another meeting space for United Methodist organizations and other area ministerial groups, Elmore said.

"One of the things this building says is that campus ministry and our church relation are important to Lindsey Wilson," he said. "The Begley Chapel has already had a huge impact on not just this campus but the entire community. And we hope the Sumner Center plays an equally important role."
