Detective Atwood investigating teen's drowning death Kentucky State Police Detective George Atwood of Columbia Kentucky State Police Post 15 is investigating the events which caused a 16-year-old Tompkinsville teenager to jump into a water release spillway at the Tompkinsville City Lake. The youth, David Bland, died at approximately 12:05 a.m., January 10, 2005, at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, despite the efforts of all involved. At approximately 11:00 a.m., Sunday, January 9, James Blland was visiting the City Lake with several friends. He dove into the swift water and was swept downstream through a drainage tile. Monroe County Fire and Rescue, the Tompkinsville Fire Department, Monroe County Sheriff's Department, and the Tompkinsville Police responded to the scene and mounted a search for the victim. Bland was pulled from the frigid water nearly a mile downstream from his point of entry. He was taken to the Monroe County Medical Center for treatment, and was later flown to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville.
