Equalization of Adair Road Funds proposal

Would benefit 4 Districts, be a loss for 3
When the Adair Fiscal Court meets Tuesday, January 11, 2005, at 6:00 p.. Item #15. "Equalization of road funds in districts," would appear to have a better than even chance of passing.

That might be inferred from the fact that four districts would benefit from the change, and three would lose. Of the three districts which would lose funding, one is not represented at this time, and will not be until Governor Ernie Fletcher appoints a replacement for Magistrate Junior Brown, who resigned last year.

At present, road funds are distributed evenly among the seven districts, regardless of the number of miles in the district.

Four districts would benefit from the change. They are District 6 (Joe Rogers), District 4 (J.M. Shelley), District 1 (Roger Stephens), and District 3 (Tony Loy).

Three districts would get less. They are District 2 (Wid Harris), District 5 (Vacant), and District 7 (Terry Farris).

There are approximately 1,166 individual roads designated as county roads. These roads are at least .2 mile in length. Joe Rogers' district has 240; Tony Loy's district, 187; J.M. Shelley's district, 184; district formerly represented by Junior Brown, 166; Roger Stephens district, 144; Terry Farris' district 127; and Wid Harris district, 188.

The county has over 613 miles of county maintained roads. The roads budget is approximately $645,000 per year, with about $500,000 coming from the state and is used mostly for blacktopping. About $145,000 in county funds is generally used for gravel roads.
