Arts and culture outreach effort underway Local organizations and interested individuals encouraged to participate as The Center for Rural Development launches a major arts and culture outreach. Recognizing the importance of arts and culture to each and every community in its 42-county service region, and the impact they can have on the quality of life, The Center for Rural Development is launching Art Matters, an extensive outreach campaign. Art Matters will focus on increasing awareness of and access to arts and culture, and encouraging and supporting additional arts educational opportunities. The Centers goal through Art Matters is to be a proactive leader and facilitate relationship-building efforts to enhance arts and culture throughout Southern and Eastern Kentucky. Providing leadership that stimulates a better way of life is at the core of The Centers mission, explains Lonnie Lawson, President and CEO, and we fully realize the importance of arts and culture to our communities and to our individual lives. The value and impact of music, theater, visual arts, literary arts, crafts, dance and all other forms of art and culture reach well beyond that of entertainment. When arts and culture are prominent and flourish within a community, theres a positive ripple effect throughout education, tourism, economic development, and community and social well-being all of which are elements being addressed by the work of The Center and its affiliates. Art Matters is a dual purpose project, as its name suggests. By emphasizing the importance of art and culture to all communities, the outreach will spread the message that the arts truly make a difference. Art Matters will also provide a forum for leaders from existing arts and cultural organizations in the region, as well as arts educators and any interested individuals, to discuss issues of importance and concern and explore opportunities for collaborative efforts that can maximize resources and reap regional benefits. Pat Bradley, arts and culture outreach coordinator for The Center, is working to identify the existing arts and cultural resources in the region and begin facilitating regional discussions and cooperation. If youre involved with arts and culture in your communityor want to become involved and share The Centers belief that Art Matters, contact Pat Bradley by e-mail at pbradley@centertech.com or by phone at 606-677-6000.
