Columbia City Council Feb 2021 meeting report

A Resolution of Authority for a City of Columbia Economic Development Project, recruiting a company with 50 jobs immediately and projected growth to 300 in five years, was read by City Attorney Derrick Helm and approved unanimously at the February 1, 2021 City Council meeting.

The Economic Development Project will allow the city to purchase the Majestic Yachts property on the corner of Veterans Bypass and Highway 61 and secure a ten-year lease with a company providing shelf stable meals and delivery, much like high growth businesses in that industry such as Freshly, Hello Fresh, etc. The company, Synergy Food Group headquartered in Tennessee, would be using Kentucky proud products in their ingredients.

A land and building grant through the Lake Cumberland ADD will provide $1 million and the City will borrow and invest the balance of $500,000 for the total purchase price of the property.

Synergy has met all requirements set out in the grant process by the ADD over several months of negotiations with City Attorney Derrick Helm and Mayor Pam Hoots. More details will be posted as we receive them.

Columbia Police Chief Jason Cross read a letter announcing his retirement from 19 years service in the Columbia Police Department, 10 of those years as chief. He thanked the Mayor, Council members and the previous Chiefs who hired and trained him, Edwin Taylor and Mark Harris. He announced that officer Jr. Murphy will be working with him in the coming four weeks as he transitions to the position of Chief.

Newly elected Council member and retired bank president Robert Flowers challenged the Mayor and Council to hold budget sessions to assure each area of the city remains strong. He asked for Q&A sessions with auditors before the March meeting where the annual audit is scheduled to be presented.

The Council meets next on Monday, March 1, 2021 at 6pmCT in City Hall, 116 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY.
