Mayor's Report for January, 2021

The January 2021 activity report was provided to members of the Council for the Monday, February 1, 2021 City Council meeting. Meeting news will be posted separately. Details of the first month of the new year follow:



The City Streets Department is reviewing city streets for paving in the spring. Some of the streets that have been submitted include: Curry Street, Hayes Street, Garden Street, Sunset Acres, Mason Lane.

The City Streets Department is looking at sidewalk repair for spring. They are measuring some of the areas.

Filters changed at Trabue Russell House and at City Hall.

Windows washed at the City Hall by Parks and Recreation.

Flags replaced at Trabue Russell House, City Hall, and the Rosenwald School location on Taylor Avenue.

Carpet was shampooed at City Hall. Conference Room, Police Department, City Hall reception area. (Thanks Craig and Terry).

Craig and Terry also are cleaning all the baseboards inside city hall.

The Gas Department has done the lines for the new bank on Burkesville Road.

The Gas Department has started to work on the gas lines into the Green Hills Subdivision area. Our department will be laying these lines for the city.

Jordan Dean has joined the Gas Department. We welcome him to this new opportunity. (He took an opening that had not been filled).

The City Streets Department has picked-up around 100 bags of trash on roadways during the month. We urge people to not litter.

The Trabue Russell House is having some shingles replaced on the roof of the shed; where storage supplies are stored.

The City Streets Department has been cleaning tiles throughout town. We have had an abundance of water; and, several were needing cleaning.

Our audit report will be held at the March City Council Meeting.

We had a public hearing during the month for a grant for the maintenance building.

We had a public hearing for the gas line extension to Milltown Church Road.

Planning and Zoning had a site development meeting for the proposed new KFC. (We welcome them to our community).

Sergeant Jr. Murphy is next Columbia Police Chief

Columbia Police Chief Jason Cross, at right, read a letter to the Mayor and City Council announcing his retirement from 19 years service in the Columbia Police Department, 10 of those years as chief. He thanked Mayor Pam Hoots, Council members and the previous CPD Chiefs who hired and trained him, Edwin Taylor and Mark Harris. He chose and received unanimous support for Sergeant Jr. Murphy to begin working with him in the coming four weeks and then transition to the position of Chief. Sergeant Murphy is at left with Mayor Hoots center.
