Good news for Christmas: LCDR Jeff Giles coming home soon

Happy news for the holidays
comes from Jeff Giles who writes:

My UN Peacekeeping Mission in Ethiopia/Eritrea is coming to an end. It has been a very tough but rewarding experience for me. I have learned a great deal about survival while I have been here.

There have been some very frightening times but also there have been some very rewarding times in this mission.

It has been a tough, tiring job trying to help maintain peace between the two countries. There have been some very trying times and as I leave I believe the biggest test of peace is yet to come. During this mission, we have carried wounded soldiers to military hospitals, we have provided aid and assistance to many of the locals and we have attempted to keep the Temporary Security Zone free of military from either side.

As I leave Badme, I will never forget the people here and their daily struggles to survive. I will never forget the friendships I have forged with my fellow peacekeepers. Friendships from around the world; Croatia, Namibia, South Africa, Austria, Gambia, Uraguay, Romania and many others. I have met some of the finest officers that I have ever known. I have made one great friend over here, Major Omrcen from Croatia. He has told me many stories of his struggles during the conflict with Serbia. He lost his home and everything that he owned, yet he still maintains a positive attitude.

I am happy to be coming back home yet I will miss many of my friends. Hopefully someday our paths will cross again.

Many thanks to all of those who have sent cards, packages and good wishes to me.

See you soon Columbia!
