J.L. ''Sonny'' Vaughn, Jr., 83, retired business leader, dies

J.L. "Sonny" Vaughn, Jr., 83, 153 Colony Drive, Columbia, KY, died Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 25, 2004, at 5:20 a.m., at the Taylor County Regional Hospital.

For many years, Mr. Vaughn was president of Reed Bros. Insurance Agency, continuing a family tradition in Columbia's largest insurance agency. His father, the late J.L. "Jimmy" Vaughn, preceded him in that position, and his son, Johnny Vaughn, succeeded him.

The funeral service will be Saturday, November 27, 2004, at 10:00 a.m., at Grissom Funeral Home, 200 Campbellsville St., Columbia, KY, with Bro. Raymond Martin the officiating clergy.


In addition to his leadership at Reed Bros. Insurance Agency, Mr. Vaughn had been a leader in Democratic politics. He was a member of Columbia Baptist Church and of Columbia Masonic Lodge 96, Columbia, KY.

He was the son of the late J.L. and Elsie Furkins Vaughn.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice Mae Moran Vaughn, in January, 1985.

He is survived by his wife, Josephine Powell Vaughn, Columbia, and the following:
  • His son: Johnny M. Vaughn, Columbia, KY
  • One sister and brother-in-law: Judy and Ray Morrison, Campbellsville, KY
  • Three step-daughters and their spouses: Judy and Louis Roy, Russell Springs, KY; Vicki and Scott Wilson, Cookeville, TN; and Lisa and Mike Brown, Kingwood, TX
  • Two granddaughters: Amanda Vaughn and Susan Burton
  • One great granddaughter: Taylor Marie Burton
  • And several step grandchildren and step great grandchildren
Memorials are suggested to either Hospice of Central Kentucky or to the Columbia Baptist Church Youth, which may be left at the funeral home.

Visitation is after 4:00 p.m., Friday, November 25, 2004, at Grissom Funeral Home, 200 Campbellsville St., Columbia, KY
