New Childrens Activities Director joins CUMC

By George Kolbenschlag

Columbia United Methodist has hired an outstanding young woman as the church's much sought children's program director.

Kayla Koerner is a Freshman Wesley Scholar at Lindsey Wilson. Her home church is Richmond, Kentucky's First United Methodist. She has been attending there for "about ten years."

She says she has received a "strong calling" to the youth ministry and looks forward to working with CUMC youth and continuing in children's ministry after she graduates from Lindsey Wilson.

Until she was in the fifth grade, Kayla never attended a church she could call her own. But she frequently attended vacation Bible schools at different churches all summer long. Then in middle school she began attending Richmond First United Methodist and was soon helping with nursery care, vacation Bible school and Sunday School as a volunteer.

She says, "That was my first taste of Children's Ministry but I didn't know how much I loved it until I got into high school. In my freshman year in high school I was at a Methodist youth conference and received the call to ministry."

Kayla interned with the children's director at her home church for four years before coming to Lindsey Wilson and says that's where she learned the ins and outs of children's ministry. She served on the children's ministry board, coordinated the vacation Bible school, taught Sunday School and led "Time for Children" at the altar during services. Her work with the children at Columbia United will be similar.

She also has served on summer staff as a counselor at Aldersgate Camp and Retreat Center in Ravenna, KY. She feels "strongly that God is calling me to pursue this position at Columbia United Methodist.

I am a firm believer that children's ministry is incredibly important. I am passionate about ministering to children and helping them start and progress in their faith journey. At present, after I graduate, I am next in line to take over the children's ministry full-time at my home church and I would love to grow that passion while here and so become more equipped when I graduate."
