Item: Who will be Mayor of Columbia during the time between Mayor Hardwick's resignation, which takes effect October 17, 2004, and selection of a new Mayor of Columbia, expected to take place at the regular November 2004 Council Meeting?

As the senior member on the City Council, 20-year Councilwoman Louise Hutchison, will be Mayor Pro Tem during the time, and, as such, will also preside over the Council meeting which selects the next Mayor, who will serve until the next general election in 2006.

Item: Settle an argument. We won't tell you who disputants are, but there is a big fuss over whether the private store next door to Columbia High and Graded School was called:
  1. The Little Store?
  2. Furkins' Store?
  3. The Tiny Grocery?
  4. Some other name or all of the above?
This reaches way back in history. But the two room shotgun building is still vividly remembered by those who attended the old school at the top of Graded Hill and who had the ready coins to buy a 15 hamburger, hotdog, or sandwich du jour, and a 5 pop or milk.

The more affluent could add a 5 side of candy, Nabs or potato chips. The heavy risk takers could buy a tiny cardboard drum of salted redskin peanuts for 5, hoping to a prize of 1, their money back in coin, a dime, or a shiny quarter. The coin wasn't wrapped, but all, as I remember, were new or newly cleaned.

Let us know if you have an opinion on the name, or share a memory. The argument to be settled on the name issue is hot between two first cousins who are third cousins of mine. My role is simply to preserve history and peace in the family - not always mutually compatible goals.
